The LHSAA’s Executive Committee approved the changing of state championship schedules for five different sports on Thursday.
The Select/Non-Select split voted into effect by the member-school principals this past January forced the LHSAA and host committees to re-evaluate the schedules for the sports of Girls’ Basketball, Boys’ Basketball, Softball and Baseball.
Girls’ Basketball and Boys’ Basketball, working in conjunction with both Hammond and Lake Charles, added Monday to the schedule and will see six games played each day. Semifinals will take place from Monday until Thursday and Finals on Friday and Saturday.
Both Baseball and Softball had an extra day added to their schedule in order to accommodate the influx of teams. Sulphur Parks and Recreation (SPAR) has been the host to all classifications of Softball for the past 16 years and Baseball for 3 years. Both events will finish on Saturday of their respective weekends with Softball starting on Thursday and Baseball on Wednesday.
Finally, the Soccer state championships ran into conflict with Mardi Gras weekend in New Orleans. Tad Gormley Stadium and City Park serve as not only the site for the state championships, but a staging area for all floats and participants taking part in Endymion, the area’s largest Mardi Gras parade. With Endymion running on Saturday, the facility is not available to the LHSAA.
The new schedule combines boys’ and girls’ Division IV and III playing four total games on Wednesday. Thursday’s schedule will feature strictly girls with their Division II & Division I capped off by the Girls’ All-Star Game. Friday will mimic Thursday’s schedule showcasing the boys.
